Primary General Music K-5
Primary music is taught using the Orff Schulwerk method of music education, which uses speech, singing, movement and instruments to teach musical concepts. Sight reading is taught using solfege and Curwen hand signs. Simple melodies, rhythms and harmonies are taught using pitched and unpitched instruments. This gives the foundation for grade four when they begin recorders. Composition and improvisation begin with simplicity growing in complexity each year. Musical games, dance, literature, and other props are used to promote musical and movement creativity.
Choral Music at St Lorenz allows all students to have the opportunity to sing in church and chapel, offering their musical gifts to praise God. Using their experiences in the general music classroom, students work to develop their singing voices and read music. Rhythms, patterns, counting, diction, and breathing techniques are just a few of the skills that help students become well-rounded in the choral music classroom. Just as in playing an instrument, the elements that go into choral music enhance cognitive function to aid in all academia.
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! – Psalm 150:6
Instrumental Music stimulates the mind and the body to enhance cognitive function, to enrich the spirit, and to engage physical coordination. Students begin 5th grade with a fitting to a new instrument and are given small group instructions as well as whole group rehearsals. They have two concerts that showcase their beginnings. In 6th grade students continue to develop in skill in the Intermediate Band. This provides more opportunities to serve, such as in concerts, chapels, and church services to enhance worship, and to enrich the community and congregation. As the upper grade Wind Ensemble is more performance based, select students are offered an introduction into the Adult Wind Ensemble that has a mission to enhance worship and perform at annual events for the community.
Jazz Band is an invitation-only Band that also allows students to refine and develop their skills. The Spartan Big Band not only plays for fall and spring concerts, but also has a special Christmas Concert in the Learning Center. They are often found out in the community, bringing music to banquets and other events.
Lutheran School Music Festival Held yearly, this festival offers our students the opportunity to praise God through music. Students will showcase their love of Christ through mass choral and instrumental pieces. Additionally, students may showcase their God-given musical talents through solos, duets, and small ensembles.
Girls of Grace a Christian Dance Ministry within St. Lorenz Lutheran Church, dedicated to serving the Lord through worshipful, interpretive dance. This ministry is made up of over 90 dancers from grade 4 through college. The group receives its directive and inspiration from Psalm 149:3. “Let them praise His Name with dancing!”
We are God’s instruments of praise…Let us praise God with our instruments!
