Academic Opportunities

Spelling & Geography Bees

Each year St. Lorenz students in grades 5-8 participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. Students are chosen for participation in this challenging test of geographic knowledge based upon the results of a qualifying test. The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness about geography.

Academic Bowl

Each spring, St. Lorenz holds it’s annual Academic Bowl. The Academic Bowl is an academic competition between teams composed of St. Lorenz students in grades five through eight. It was organized many years ago to recognize the academic abilities of our students and encourage them to use these abilities to the glory of God. Questions are written by our teachers and encompass all of the academic areas as well as some trivia.

Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education, increasing interest in science, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement for students. Our St. Lorenz team provides a  competitive environment for students with a natural aptitude for science.  Students compete in 2-4 events from the 23 events offered. The team travels to two or three invitational competitions to prepare for our Regional competition which is required to qualify for the State competition held every year at Michigan State University.  St. Lorenz has been the top team in our region for the past four years.  Dedicated volunteers help to prepare the students for their events during twice a week practices held from December through March.
